Merle Travis (1917-1983) was an American country and folk guitarist and singer-songwriter born in Rosewood, Kentucky. He is best known for developing "Travis picking," an alternating-bass fingerstyle technique that became foundational to modern acoustic guitar playing, and for hits such as "Sixteen Tons" and "Dark as a Dungeon." His playing profoundly influenced later fingerstyle guitarists, most notably Chet Atkins, as well as Doc Watson and Scotty Moore.
