Fred McDowell (1904–1972), also known as Mississippi Fred McDowell, was a pioneering Delta blues guitarist and singer. Renowned for his mesmerizing slide guitar technique, McDowell’s music was deeply rooted in the raw, emotive style of rural Mississippi. Unlike many blues musicians of his era, he primarily played in open tunings with a bottleneck slide, creating a distinctive sound. Songs like "You Gotta Move" (later popularized by The Rolling Stones) and "Shake 'Em On Down" highlight his deep vocal delivery and soulful guitar work. McDowell's influence on blues and rock is profound, bridging traditional Delta blues with the modern era.
